Stay Safe in the Sun This Summer

Summer is a great time of year with vacations, picnics, swimming, bike riding and other sports. With all that fun, it’s easy to forget about safety. Although the sun is bright, warm and comforting, it is also damaging. Too much time in the sun can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke, eye damage or cataracts and skin cancer. Remember some simple tips to protect yourself this summer: The sun is strongest between 10 am – 4 pm. Spend less time outside during these hours. Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Cover all exposed areas! Wear lip balm to protect your lips. Wear a hat to protect your head and face. Wear sunglasses that block UV rays. Wear light, loose-fitting clothes. Take breaks in the shade to cool your body temperature. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Stay Safe in the Water this Summer

It’s that time of year! Texans love to beat the summer heat in the water. Whether you’re taking a dip in your home pool, splashing at the local water park or cruising on the lake, follow these steps to keep your family as safe as possible. Never leave children unattended. Practice “reach supervision” and stay within arm’s reach of your child at all times. Use Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices for children who cannot swim, although these devices cannot take the place of adult supervision. Always swim with a buddy. Handy Cleaners in Your Kitchen Cabinets!

Looking for a great household cleaner? Look no further than your own pantry. Some food items can also be used to solve those tough cleaning issues. White Distilled Vinegar To clean your coffee maker, fill the pot to six cup line with vinegar. Pour into reservoir and let vinegar run half way through the cycle. Turn coffee maker off and let sit for ten minutes. Turn pot back on and complete brewing cycle. Discard vinegar and run two or more brew cycles through coffee maker with fresh, cold water. To clean your garbage disposal, freeze a mixture of half water and half vinegar in ice cube trays. Run the cubes through the disposal. To rid the disposal of odors, pour one cup of vinegar into the disposal and rinse for three minutes with cold water.
