  • The city of Grand Prairie started in the 1870’s when early settler Alexander MacRae Dechman traded in a portion of his wagons and oxen for land. In 1876, Dechman made a wise decision when he gave up part of his land to the Texas and Pacific Railroad in exchange for operating a railroad depot on it. He ensured the value of his Grand Prairie real estate from then on. The village struggled for a while, but received a needed boost when the trolley joined Fort Worth and Dallas in 1902 and within the next few years, the community created the Grand Prairie Independent School District and the town began to develop in earnest.
