Top Tips for Selling Your Home

Have you outgrown your home? Or maybe it’s time to downsize. No matter what the reason for selling your home is, or the state of the housing market, it can be a stressful time for even the most even-keeled human.

We think that selling a home can be an exciting time. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, and we want you to enjoy it. Here are some pro-tips we think will help get your home the ooohs and aaaahs from potential buyers.

Curb Appeal

When it comes to buying homes, buyers do tend to judge a book by its cover. Be sure the outside of your home entices them to see more of it as soon as they step out of the car. Keep your yard well-manicured, add a pop of color with plants, flowers or even a fresh coat of paint on your front door.

Declutter

Decluttering is the hot trend right now, but even if you haven’t jumped on the Marie Kondo bandwagon yet. You should. Make sure your home is show worthy by cleaning out closets, drawers, cupboards and even your secret junk hiding spaces. Potential buyers are nosey, and they will look through everything. Make sure your junk isn’t distracting them.

A Little TLC

Okay, so while you are cleaning out all the nooks and crannies. It may also be a good time to repaint the walls to a fresh, natural color. Or if you have painted recently, give all the walls and baseboards a good once over removing any scuff marks or other flaws.  As you go from room to room check door handles or knobs, give them a tightening too. Don’t forget the lightbulbs. While it may seem trivial, loose handles or missing light bulbs have a negative effect on buyers. Makes them wonder what else is broken.

Consider a Storage Unit

When it comes to home staging, less is more. Now maybe the time to put all those personal items away for safekeeping. You want the next homeowner to visualize themselves in the space. So that means no matter how beautiful your family photos are or how awesome your one of a kind Dalmatian painting is, it could turn off potential buyers.

Take a Whiff

Now that you have decluttered, painted and fixed the imperfections, it’s time to clear the air. No one wants to walk into a stinky house or move into one for that matter. The problem is we often become accustomed to weird smells and don’t even notice them anymore. Ask an unbiased third party to help you conduct a sniff test.  If a thorough cleaning doesn’t get rid of any foul odors, call in the professional. Don’t try to mask it with candles and air fresheners that could make it worse.
